Reinventing Healthcare in Your Home: Part 2

Final Collage Draft for post #3

Welcome back to my two post series on Reinventing Healthcare in Your Home! In Part 1, I talked about the first five oils that come in the DoTerra Family Physician Kit. If you have not had a chance to read it then click the link here. Let’s discuss the last five essential oils in the DoTerra Family Physician Kit.

Deep Blue

Deep Blue (Soothing Blend) essential oil is by far my favorite essential oil for pain relief. Deep
Blue is perfect for muscle and joint support. I personally use this all the time to liDeep Blue blendmit the amount of pain medications I have to take for the back and neck injuries I sustained when I was rear-ended on the freeway. Deep Blue is a topically used soothing blend consisting of a unique combination of wintergreen, camphor, peppermint, blue tansy, German chamomile, helichrysum, and osmanthus essential oils. There are three main ways to use deep blue. First, you can rub it on your joints to help with soreness and stiffness. Second, you can rub it on muscles to reduce discomfort (especially before and after a workout). Thirdly, you can combine it with carrier oil for a great deep-tissue massage for those of you who are lucky enough to have someone from whom you can ask for a massage. I couldn’t find an online link but if you want to find more information about this oil and how to use it, check out the DoTERRA product guide found through the link above and check out my Research Page for information on the oils in each blend.

Breathe

breathe blend

Breathe (Respiratory Blend) essential oil is a blend consisting of a unique combination of laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, melaleuca, lemon, and ravensara. This essential oil is great for those of you who, like me, have seasonal allergies. The blend can be applied directly to the chest and neck to help clear up your lungs and sinuses. It can be added to a humidifier or a diffuser when you need to sleep better at night. Lastly, it can be used directly on the chest or bottom of your feet during those times of seasonal discomfort which can really be a damper on one’s day. You can find more information about this oil and how to use by clicking on the product information guide here and check out my Research Page for information on the oils in each blend.

DigestZenDigestZen blend

DigestZen (Digestive Blend) essential oil is a digestive blend consisting of a unique combination of ginger, peppermint, tarragon, fennel, caraway, coriander, and anise essential oils. It can be swallowed at meal times to help with healthy, comfortable digestion,  or for children, it can be applied to the bottoms of their feet when they are having digestive issues. It can also be applied directly on the stomach when battling nausea, digestive discomfort, and/or motion sickness. As I am gluten intolerant, this blend will be my friend when I am unsure on whether something I am eating has gluten in it. I couldn’t find an online link but if you want to find more information about this oil and how to use it, check out the DoTERRA product guide found through the link above and check out my Research Page for information on the oils in each blend.

OnGuard

onguard blendOn Guard (Protective Blend) essential oil is a natural defense essential blend consisting of a unique combination of wild orange, clove bud, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary essential oils.  I’m currently using it as I write this blog by diluting it in my tea for added immune support. On Guard blend can also be used as a protective mouth rinse by diluting it and gargle morning and night. For those of you who are not a fan of the sharp taste of this essential oil (due to the strong clove and cinnamon presence), you can put several drops of On Guard blend in a gelatin capsule (or purchase already made beadlets/capsules here) to avoid the intense taste. You can also use this blend in a humidifier when fighting sickness and don’t want the airborne pathogens to affect anyone else. It can also replace items such as lysol spray by diluting On Guard in a spray bottle and spraying on doorknobs, telephones, and other surfaces that might be contaminated. I couldn’t find an online link but if you want to find more information about this oil and how to use it, check out the DoTERRA product guide found through the link above and check out my Research Page for information on the oils in each blend.

Frankincense

frankincense EOI consider Frankincense essential oil to be an important addition to the medicine cabinet. In the DoTERRA Family Physician Kit it says that “when in doubt, use Frankincense” because of its versatility of uses. Frankincense can be used to take care of minor cuts, bites, and sores. When you are stressed and/or have a headache, Frankincense can be combined with lavender and peppermint to provide relief. Like On Guard, it can also be used to support immune function. It can be used aromatically and applied directly to the skin to help lift up your mood and increase awareness. The last comment I will make is that it can also be combined with a carrier oil (Specific oils used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin in massage and aromatherapy such as Fractionated Coconut Oil- insert link to buy) or face moisturizer for healthy skin. You can find more information about this oil and how to use by clicking on the product information guide here, and and check out my Research Page for more information..

Thank you for reading through to the end of this blog. There is so much more information out there and uses, but I hope this gave you a better idea of ways essential oils can change your life and reinvent healthcare in your home. I’m very excited about the opportunity to change the way I take care of myself and my husband in a natural, pure, non-toxic, and affordable way! Once again, diluting the essential oils mentioned will be the best route if you have really sensitive skin, or just want to make it last longer. You only need a tiny amount which is an amazing feature of essential oils! If your interest has been peaked, and you would like to try this out for yourself, please go to my website (http://www.mydoterra.com/karlasnow/), or the titles of each essential oil links back to my store. There you can learn more about DoTERRA, shop for products, and learn about the company. Reinventing Health Care in Your Home

Have you ever gone to the doctor and regretted going because they just prescribed you some pills? I know I have! I became frustrated with how Kaiser would immediately prescribe me medications or antibiotics without always knowing the answer to my problems. They push the meds so much that I began to research more about alternative methods. I did this in order to figure out how could take care of my body without pumping it full of medications that I can’t even begin to pronounce! My mother was a homeopathic (using natural remedies to treat common ailments) queen when I was growing up, so I decided to investigate. It was then that I discovered DoTERRA’s Family Physician Kit. You might be thinking, “Oh great, another homeopathic hippie story.” However, before you discredit this, please humor me by reading on. I explained what essential oils are in my previous post here. The Family Physician Kit consists of 10 essential oils and blends (a combo of different oils for a specific purpose) that families need on a regular basis to take care of their family. There are many different ways these essential oils can help you, but I will be focusing on a five oils that can bolster your medicinal repertoire. Basically the concept is to replace the medications you might have at home, or have been prescribed, for a natural, safer, non-toxic, and cheaper alternative–essential oils.

Lavender, the all-things calming essential oil has been studied countless times on its ability to help with sleep. I personally have chronic insomnia to the point that I was having memory loss. The doctor’s wanted to put me on meds, but thankfully, one doctor told me that I would eventually have to depend on the medication. Well, definitely not going that route! Instead, I use DoTERRA’s Lavender Essential oil on the arches of my feet, and dilute it into a pillow spray to help me sleep, and guess what? It works just like medication would, without the nasty side effects. Not only that, but Lavender essential oil is also used to calm anxiety and soothe emotions, soothe irritated skin and lips, and to help calm bee sting or bug bite reactions. You can find more information about this oil and how to use it by clicking on the product information guide here, and this outside source.

LemonLemon stock photo

Lemon essential oil has long been used to clean and freshen up the home. I’ve used this oil with honey to help soothe those pesky sore or dry throats, elevate my mood (especially on those mornings when I have to get up really early), and help fight infections of the digestive and reproductive system (because it has antioxidant and detoxifying properties). Lemon essential oil can also be diluted and used to clean around the home, which is a good alternative to the toxic cleaning supplies that can be dangerous to children and even adults. You can find more information about this oil and how to use by clicking on the product information guide here, and this outside source.

Peppermint

Peppermint essential oil has been a life saver for me! I was recently in a bad car accident and the medications the doctors were having me take were just not cutting it. Knowing that more or stronger meds is not the answer, I rubbed peppermint oil on my lower back and neck to help with the inflammation, and on my forehead to help with my headaches. The result was a cool, soothing sensation that helped bring down the inflammation and dial back my pain levels. Peppermint can also be used with lemon for a healthy alternative to regular mouth rinse (after heavily diluting it). When inhaled deeply, peppermint can also increase alertness, as well as help you find relief when you are overheating. You can find more information about this oil and how to use by clicking on the product information guide here, and this outside source.

Melaleucamelaleuca-alternifolia stock photo

Melaleuca essential oil sounds quite strange; however, you may know it as Tea Tree oil. Basically it is known as first aid for the skin. I’m not very familiar with all the benefits of this oil, but I’m curious to try it out because of the reports I’ve gotten from others. Diluted melaleuca is used to help cleanse your skin from blemishes and rashes, as well as, protect the skin from dangers in the environment by applying it to your feet and toenails. I know it better as being great for maintaining a healthy scalp and hair, and immediately recognized the common name from shampoos and conditioners at salons. You can find more information about this oil and how to use by clicking on the product information guide here, and also this link and this link to outside sources.

Oregano

Oregano essential oil is commonly used for immune support and is an antioxidant. A few drops can be taken in a veggie capsule to help with immune support and GI health, as well as, diluted and applied to the bottoms of your feet as a natural defense to what you have been exposed to throughout the day. You can find more information about this oil and how to use by clicking on the product information guide here, and this outside source.

The Physicians Kit contains five more essential oils and blends which I will be discussing in my next post Reinventing Health Care in Your Home: Part 2, so be sure to follow my blog so you can be one of the first to know when it has been posted! If you have sensitive skin, you should consider diluting the essential oils mentioned. I dilute my oils mainly to make it last longer because you only need a tiny amount for it to be effective. Visit my website at http://www.mydoterra.com/karlasnow/ for information about ordering oils, or click the titles of each essential oil. If you have any questions please leave a comment. Thank you all for your support and interest, I hope to post Part 2 of this topic up by sometime next week!

What is an Essential Oil

Hello, welcome to my blog. The following post is taken from DoTERRA’s blog, found here.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.

Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals [beneficial chemicals found in plants, as antioxidants that are good for your health] made up of volatile organic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated [not diluted with harmful chemicals] essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue on your hand is full of essential oils.

In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications.
